Curriculum Highlights:

Our 7th and 8th grade curriculum embodies our mission of promoting academic excellence, community service and environmental responsibility through family and community partnerships. Our teachers intertwine STEAM principles, service learning, environmental activism and a technological component into every unit they create. For example, our 7th graders solve real world problems involving surface area and volume by investigating cereal boxes. They study how the shape of a box affects the volume of cereal that a box could hold. That information allows them to calculate the amount of cardboard that would be saved if Cheerios converted from a rectangular box to a cubical box, and then they send their findings and suggestions to General Mills. Students then use this information to calculate the number of boxes they will need to hold all of our food pantry donations so that they can order accordingly.

We treat thinking as a verb rather than a noun and challenge our students to apply concepts and analyze and evaluate the ideas that they learn in class. Students learn to see problems from more than one angle and to understand the role that various organizations play in local and global issues. To prepare our students to meet the challenges of the future we offer a wide array of rigorous courses to suit every student’s wants and needs that promote the following Learning Gate ideals.
